1. What’s so special about the Fiber in Gnu Bars?
The 6 natural whole grains in Gnu Bars are rich in beneficial nutrients, minerals, antioxidants and phytonutrients as well as rich in Fiber. The whole grains in Gnu Bars contain all the parts of the entire grain kernel; they haven’t been milled or processed out like other so many other whole grain foods or supplements. Plus, unlike Fiber supplements, Gnu Bars taste great. They also provide you with nearly half of the Daily Value of Fiber your body needs to stay healthy!
Gnu Bars come in a convenient bar form so you can always have them with you. So when you think of Fiber, think of great-tasting, all natural Gnu! It works!
2. What is a Dextrin?
A dextrin is a complex carbohydrate which helps provide sustained energy for the body. It is an unmodified and unrefined starch. The source of the dextrins in Gnu Bars is brown rice. A dextrin should not be confused with a “maltodextrin”, which is a highly refined form of corn starch that is rapidly metabolized in the human body. Maltodextrins do not provide sustained energy and have little or no nutritional benefit.
3. What is Inulin?
Inulin is a naturally occurring vegetable fiber found in over 36,000 plants and vegetables. It is a soluble fiber that is not digested in the stomach or small intestine. It reaches the large intestinal tract where it is fermented by the intestinal flora and acts as a prebiotic, promoting the growth of healthy bacteria in the colon and supporting a healthy digestive process.
4. What are the “Other Carbohydrates” in Gnu Bars?
The “Other Carbohydrates” listed in the Nutrition Facts are carbohydrates in our ingredients that are not classified as Sugars or Fiber on the label.
These are mainly from the starches in ingredients such as the oats, flour, bran, apples and plums.
5. What are “Natural Flavors”?
Natural flavors include the essential oils, essence, or products of roasting foods, such as fruits, vegetables and even leaves and bark. The term “flavors” is used because the oils, essence, and products’ main function is to provide flavor to the food, not nutritional value.
While these flavors are extracted from their full ingredients, they are 100% natural and do not contain any artificial additives. Some flavors include Monosodium Glutamate (MSG); none of the flavors in Gnu Bars do.
6. Is a Gnu Bar a food or a pharmaceutical?
We call our Gnu Bar “functional food,” because it’s food that helps you address specific health concerns. We make food that does more than just taste great. It’s not medicine, it’s Food that Works™. Gnu Bars taste great and give your body the Fiber it needs while also helping you target irregularity and high cholesterol. The Fiber in Gnu Bars also helps with diets and weight management. (See next question.) Think of Gnu Bars as food your body was made for.
7. How do Gnu Bars help with diets and weight management?
Because Gnu Bars have 12 grams of Fiber, they help to create a sensation of fullness, known as satiety. They will help curb your cravings by making you feel fuller longer and therefore, eat less.
8. Can I eat too many Gnu Bars?
We recommend starting with one bar a day, if your body isn’t used to getting the Fiber it needs. Gnu Bars are gentle and effective and won’t cause diarrhea. You will experience less strain during bowel movements and more regularity. As with any new food you add to your diet, moderation is key. Be sure to drink at least 8 glasses of water per day as you increase your Fiber intake.
9. Are Gnu Bars safe for my child or toddler?
The American Heart Association Eating Plan recommends that children older than two get the majority of their calories from complex carbohydrates high in Fiber. They recommend “age plus 5” to set dietary Fiber amounts for young children. For example, a six year old should eat 6 (their age) plus 5 grams of Fiber = 11 grams of Fiber daily. As a child consumes up to 1500 calories daily, he or she can tolerate 25 grams or more of dietary Fiber. Please visit the Keep Your Kids Healthy Section to learn more about the health benefits of Fiber for children.
10. Are Gnu Bars Vegan?
All of our flavors are vegan except for the Blondie Bar. The Blondie Bar contains whole milk powder. In all of our other flavors, there are no ingredients derived from animal products. However, it should be noted that the cane sugar in the dark chocolate chips that we include in our Blondie, Chocolate Brownie and Espresso Chip bars is processed with bone char.
11. Are Gnu Bars Kosher?
The OU-D symbol on every Gnu Bar certifies that it is a kosher product certified by the Orthodox Union. Because our bakery also processes dairy products, Gnu Bars carry a “D” after the OU symbol, but other than the Blondie Bar, the bars themselves are dairy free.

The Company
What is Gnu Foods?
Gnu Foods is a small company that makes all natural, great-tasting foods that help address specific nutritional needs and health conditions. It was founded in 2004 with the introduction of our first product, the Gnu Bar, a high fiber bar that promotes regularity and heart health.
What is the company’s philosophy?
Real health makes us feel good inside and out, physically and emotionally. Returning to real health, feeling good the way nature intended—that’s what Gnu Foods is all about.
We’re dedicated to creating Food that Works.™ Processed foods tend to have all the “goodness” squeezed out of them and many contain additives which simply aren’t what our bodies were designed for. The result: an obesity epidemic in America, even among our children, as well as soaring rates of heart disease, cancer, and Type 2 diabetes.
Gnu Foods is what your body was made for.
Where can I find Gnu Bars?
There are two easy ways to get our entirely natural, great-tasting high-fiber Gnu bars. The first is right here on our website at our Online Store. The other is to check for stores in your area by using our Find A Store tool.
Flavor & Fiber. Together at Last.®
The Gnu
Our name was inspired by the African Gnu (pronounced “noo” or “nyoo”).
The Gnu has an ox-like head, the mane of a horse, and the horns of a buffalo. It may look unusual from the outside, but inside, it functions beautifully. Flourishing in the grasslands and plains of Southern and Eastern Africa, the gnu lives in balance with nature.
At Gnu Foods, we create foods that help keep us in natural balance. Our foods are designed with you in mind, made with all natural ingredients every body needs. Since you were our inspiration, we hope you give Gnu Bars a try. And pretty soon, you’ll be feeling like a “gnu” you.
